Bombay Bhangra Club

Bombay Bhangra Club Review

Who would have thought, that British suburbs, like Birmingham are responsible for hype around dancable Indian Pop music - Bhangra beats together with Hip Hop grooves and Rap. "Bhangra" has become the catchword these days ever since Punjabi MC (from Birmingham) entered the German Music Charts with his Bhangra song. Outside of the Indian community, nobody really took notice of the music that has been playing all along in the English clubs "around the corner". It was small labels, that started working with this style, labels like Nachural Music, Roma II or Envy from Birmingham. These agilly labels have set a trend, that has spread beyond the music business - it has also reach the international fashion business. "BOMBAY BHANGRA CLUB" has the tracks coming from this scene - bands, musicians and DJ's such as Achanak, Bombay Talkie, Sukhi, DJ Zeus, Anakhi and many more.

The origin of the European produced Bhangra sound comes from the Indian traditional music from the Punjab region. Main drum instrument is the Dhol, that builds the thriving groove, accompanied by synthesizer, guitar, vocals and samples from Hip Hop, UK Garage sounds, etc. Actually a very simple synthesis, but also very effective. "BOMBAY BHANGRA CLUB" is compiled by DJ Red Buddha and released through Blue Flame/Zomba in Germany and shows Bhangra music, that is being played in the clubs under the heading of "hot stuff".

The Bollywood film industries is buying almost every Bhangra release these days for their movies and the Indian music industry is baffled by the trend, that comes from Birmingham and other cities from the U.K. making this hype into an international story of success.

What Actually Is BHANGRA...

A music style that is part of the recent India trend, that didn't come upon us like the great flood, such as other lifestyles and fashion trends, but rather as a soft drizzle leaving us unable to decide on either getting a nose piercing or drather having a cup of yogi/spice-tea. It's a question of time, when the first grand Bollywood movies will be shown in theatres around the world. Recently so-called "Desi-Parties" are taking over in clubs - fashion show and dance event in one.

I Believe In Music: The History Of The Gross Prophet

I Believe In Music: The History Of The Gross Prophet Review

The Gross Prophet was the band that Redlands, California relied on for public and private events from 1970 to 1994. However, they were not just a bunch of local guys - all of the members of The Gross Prophet were seasoned veterans of surf and rock bands in California. This 50-track, double CD collection features tracks by Gross Prophet members made before, during and after their time in the band.

In addition to 23 unreleased tracks recorded by The Gross Prophet for promotion purposes, lots of rare tracks by The Genteels, The Tornadoes, The Truants, Never So Few (all unreleased), The Insects (featuring well-known guitar maker Wayne Charvel), The Light, Bob Summerour (two unreleased tracks), Rubicon, Gerald Sanders (also unreleased), Jon & The Nightriders, Mike Methane And The Blue Flames (all unreleased) and Roy Swedeen. Even the released tracks are either hard to find on CD or have never been digitized. Featuring "Moon Dawg" (The Tornadoes), "I'm Gonna Take Care Of Everything" (a #28 hit for Rubicon) and Gerald Sanders' "Georgia Rain" (written by Jody Reynolds).

Pool Service: Summer Chill

Pool Service: Summer Chill Review

With "pool service" Blue Flame Records released a label compilation, which at the same time is also a milestone in relaxing sound for sun-hungry lounge, party and chillout fans! No up-squeezed titles, but affectionately chosen sound pearls for a perfect day at the pool or at home. Ambient mixes, groovy sounds, mixed with jazz, Nu Bossa, Down Beat and electronics compiled by DJ Red Buddha.

Mediterrian sounds come from Barrière feat. Themis with sensual vocals and melodious surfaces, which are being tickled from the loudspeakers. Dubdiver perpetuated himself with a Cover version of "Shine", an easy groovy Reggae sound without any hectic added. Also "Summertime" the pervasive classical track arranged by Jazzamor spreads a pleasant Lounge feeling. Delighted by the summer feeling, gentle dreams and the next vacation, Moca run by with "Post It", Lenny Mac Dowell with "Ain' t No Sunshine" and Christophe Goze with "Manana" in the slow motion speed - too beautifully, in order not to push the play button again and enjoy the 15 Tracks over and over.

I'm Here to Kill [Vinyl]

I'm Here to Kill [Vinyl] Review

(12'' VINYL EP) System and Station have been crafting smart, angular indie-pop for a decade now. While most bands have a tough time reaching the 10-year mark without growing stale or going through the motions, S&S are busy writing albums that consistently move forward into a melodic and tighter whole without sacrificing the serrated edge of their live shows. This short-playing EP is lyrically based on the true story of a woman living in the Pacific Northwest, her struggle with abusive relationships and the loss of her child at the hands of her then husband. System and Station leader, RFK Heise, explains, ''The title I'm Here To Kill comes from the stories she told me of revenge. Waking up next to her husband, watching him sleep and thinking ''I love you but I'm going to kill you''.
