Rebirth from Flames

Rebirth from Flames Review

This is the latest full length record by Santa Cruz CA band Stalins War. The album was recorded at Castle Ultimate in Oakland, CA by Zach Ohren and Mastered by Brandon Fitzgerald. Drum tracks were done by the bands ex drummer Rick Holbrook. The songs "Isla de los Muertos" and "Red Tears and Calloused Hnads" feature the famous guest vocals by Brandon Abhorrance. Moana's vocals are still screamy and thrashy, however these songs contain much more melodic parts as well.

9 in Istanbul 8 in Berlin

9 in Istanbul 8 in Berlin Review

Orientation's second, long awaited, CD-Production is ready for release. It took producers and band members Bekir Karaoglan and Andreas Advocado a long time, to be exact 3 years, to finish their new album "9 in Istanbul, 8 in Berlin".

In 2002, they sketched some ideas for new pieces in a studio at the Aegeaian Sea nearby Izmir (Turkey) and then they did it like the vintagers with the grapes: they let the music grow. "We did not have any time limits and were busy producing other artists like SULTANA, AZIZA A, KILLA HAKAN etc.", states Advocado, who plays bass and guitar and is responsible for the unique harmonic structure of the songs. "In Turkey our first record Bosporus Bridge became something like a cult. Fatih Akin used some of the tracks for his movie HEAD ON and for his new documentary about the music scene in Istanbul. For other feature films like KEBAP CONNECTION and SÜPERSEKS we contributed our music as well."

With their new album "9 in Istanbul, 8 in Berlin" ORIENTATION focuses on the traditional Turkish wedding rhythm - a 9/8 tact, which "makes people spread their arms and start dancing immediately", says Bekir, who worked as a wedding musician in his younger years and who also plays a great deal of Keyboards, Violins and Arabian Flutes (Neys). He also says, "With our music we want to prove that a 9/8 tact can be used as a Funky Beat, a Reggae or a Jazz-Rhythm. And with all these musical styles the indefinite world of Turkish percussion instruments goes very well."

ORIENTATION continues with "9 in Istanbul, 8 in Berlin" a tradition that they established with their first record Bosporus Bridge: beautiful catchy melodies, longingly melancholic singing and lyrics, modern beats, arrangements and sound-design, and last not least: dance music. One track is titled BOSPORUS BRIDGE RELOADED, and only professional ears will encounter that this catchy work is based on a 14/8 tact, that itself is based on a 9/8 and a 5/8 beat.

Along with dance floor-tunes like on "Salla!" (meaning: "Get up and dance!"), "why I don't know" and "Zanki Zaman Durmus" ORIENTATION offers somehow vulnerable and contemplative music with introverted lyrics as in "Hatalar" and "Uçan Balik" and some beautiful instrumental pieces, like "Yedi".

Internationally well-known Guest musicians such as Richard Howell (Tenor Sax, Background Vocals) and Tilmann Dehnhard (transverse flutes, Soprano Sax) as well as Berlin All Stars Suleyman Celik (percussion), Ümit Urgen (Baglama) and Serkan Kaynarcali (Kanun) define the Sound of "9 in Istanbul, 8 in Berlin".

"We believe, that this is the right time for something new. We believe that World Music, Jazz and Pop complement one another. We believe that musical Genres blend into each other and stereotyped thinking is not adequate in these times. With our music we want to address to all people."

ORIENTATION currently is engaged with MUHABBET, the uprising German/Turkish artist who sings in German but with an Arabesque twinge to it. Germany best selling weekly magazine "Der Spiegel" notes: ...a groovy Band named Orientation who impresses and delights the audience with exotic instruments like the kanun...".

Piece of My Heart

Piece of My Heart Review

Jazz or no Jazz?

Minimalistic arrangements, 60's Bossa-Nova guitars, electronic sounds. Piano, double bass and percussion. Simple, some times Pop style melodies framed by soundsgames ... Jazz?

No - Jazzamor!

With this creative concept, Jazzamor was founded in 2001 by Bettina Mischke and Roland Grosch.

In 2002 their debut album "Lazy Sunday Afternoon" (BF 39850682) was released. Loungy atmosphere, Bossa Nova with own feelings and melodies. Tracks flow into each other. Music for a ... Lazy Sunday Afternoon.

" ... This is the music, I've always been looking for: melodies without being monotonous, relaxing without being boring, rhythmic without being penetrating, modern without being worn out, classic (60's style) without sounding old-fashion, ... " (Amazon Customer Review)

Now in Spring 2004, their second album "A Piece Of My Heart" is being released. With this production, Jazzamor played even more with the contrast between electro-sounds and live instruments. Besides 12 self composed tracks, Jazzamor shows the development of their particular sound in the 2 cover versions from Bill Withers "Ain't No Sunshine" and Jamiroquais "Space Cowboy". Besides English and Portugese lyrics, they also have a track in French and German.

Jazzamor shows a piece of their heart.

Sense of Purpose [Vinyl]

Sense of Purpose [Vinyl] Review

In September 2007 In Flames entered IF STUDIOS, in Gothenburg, Sweden, to record their new album. "A Sense Of Purpose" was recorded and produced by the band together with Daniel Bergstrand (vocals) and Roberto Laghi (Bass, guitar & drums) and mixed by Toby Wright in LA (Metallica, Slayer, Ozzy Osbourne, Kiss, Motley Crue etc) and mastered by Stephen Marcussen at Marcussen mastering studios in LA. With this new album there is no doubt that IN FLAMES will take a step up the ladder towards becoming one of the biggest metal bands of all times.

Schulhoff: Flammen

Schulhoff: Flammen Review

Flammen is the most purely erotic opera you'll ever hear. The story is a heavily symbolic take on the Don Juan legend. The Don is actually cursed to go through life seducing women whether he wants to or not. Women can't resist him, and he can't stop himself. Even Death (a woman, of course) spends the whole opera chasing after him, though she can never claim him. For just as he reaches the height of boredom and self-disgust, he shoots himself in the head and comes back to life, young and virile, to begin the cycle all over again. Schulhoff was just one of many talented Jewish composers murdered by the Nazis whose music is now being rediscovered, and this is his masterpiece. It's a magnificent achievement, superbly performed and recorded. --David Hurwitz

Pop Art

Pop Art Review

"Music is the media" this quotation describes the music from OHM-G.

"Pop Art" is the second release from electronic artist Olaf Gutbrod. Since Gutbrod is also devoted to painting (Cover Artwork), he describes this productions as Pop Art; a popular form of electronic danceable music. The concept OHM-G was created during recordings of the first songs and soon became name for the complete program. It is an acoustic diary, which seems to renew itself from day to day. The diary closes in January 2002 and is released as the CD "Pop Art".

Olaf Gutbrod began his career as a musician as arranger, producer and re-mix artist of Pop Music, working with bands like London Beat, Vengaboys, etc. During this time, first fragments of the OHM-G productions are formed. The focal point of his works are in selected rhythms, sounds and voices. Extended travels were used to record uncommon samples, that are continuously woven into his music. A crossover is created by danceable and reappearing groove patterns and sequences. Skilfully OHM-G uses the human voice in his recordings, some times alienated and some times natural. The compositions contain trance elements, but also switch over to chill-out and lounge patterns and electronic lounge.

"Pop Art" has exciting experimental moments; it's full of passion and inspires the creativity of each individual listening to the music. It stands for the following thought:

"When thoughts come to ease and the rhythm moves my blood, melodies tell a story and I become my own audience, I find myself in this wonderful atmosphere Full of surprises. Music becomes a mystery. The mind stops understanding, The ears turn into eyes and experience the landscapes, That rise from the depths of subconscious. The sound turns into a brush and the computer becomes the canvas. Acoustic pictures glide through my system and manifest themselves to music, seemingly created by a strangers hand.
